Dado Rails & Picture rails

The dado rail first appeared in Georgian England when it was the style of the day for chairs to be placed against the walls of the principle rooms, the backs of the wooden chairs could damage the plasterwork and the dado rail started to be added to rooms to protect the plasterwork from the backs of the chairs.

Initially they were made of wood but by Victorian times they had started to be made of moulded plaster, their original purpose had also been forgotten as chairs were no longer placed around the edges of rooms, the dado rail had become purely decorative used to break up the expanse of wall plaster and allow different treatments of the wall above and below.

Still popular today they fulfil exactly the same function allowing the walls to be broken up and different colours and materials to be used above and below.
