Plaster Cornice - Decorative

Enriched or Decorated Plaster Coving

Originally a plain plaster coving would be run in situ to which plasterers would then fix separately moulded decorations such as flowers and modillions, cast in wooden or wax moulds.

This was expensive, but in the early nineteenth century the invention by a Frenchman of flexible gelatine moulds allowed coving with complicated details to be made off site.

Thus, from the 1840's onwards richly decorated plaster coving became widespread produced by the same techniques that we still use to make all our handmade plaster coving today.
